On October 19, 1991, a mixture of emotions filled the air as five adults and two children eagerly awaited two men who had come to British Columbia to view the land. Elder O.G. Simpson and Minister E.H. Walters traveled from Edmonton, Alberta, to meet a few individuals who loved the Lord and were ready to advance His kingdom in BC. This gathering marked the first members’ meeting of Bethel United Apostolic Church of BC.

The founding attendees included Elder O.G. Simpson, Minister E.H. Walters, Missionary E. Burrell, Sis. S. Elliston, Sis. V. Richards, Sis. C. Welsh, Sis. J. Thompson, Bro. F. Peynado, and Christina Legerton. The meeting concluded with the assurance that someone would come to establish a church in BC. That someone was Minister Edward Walters, who arrived in January 1992. A place for worship was quickly secured at Cumberland Hall in Surrey, with the basement serving as the sanctuary for ten months. On May 30, 1992, Bishop D.W. Thompson officially dedicated Bethel United Apostolic Church of Surrey to the service of God.

In November 1992, the church relocated to Burnaby, BC, finding a home at the Elk Lodge for over five years. Despite its convenience, the space came with challenges like lingering odors and disruptions during major sporting events. During this time, Bethel grew significantly, establishing Youth, Men’s, Women’s, and Sunday School Departments while simultaneously building community impact.

By 1997, the congregation began searching for a permanent building. After setbacks and disappointments, God provided an unconventional space—an old mechanic shop in a business complex. Renovations began, and by spring 1998, worship services commenced in their very own building. Bethel celebrated the freedom to worship without constant setup and teardown.

Partnerships with other local churches, like Emmanuel Pentecostal Church and Pentecostal Tabernacle, further enriched the church’s community impact. Recognition from the Jamaican Canadian Association of BC was given to Bethel for its community legacy. Concerts and conferences were held, and growth ensued.

In 2004, Elder Walters and Evangelist Walters announced plans to retire by the church’s 20th anniversary. This transition occurred in 2012, with Minister Mark Rowe, originally from Ontario, stepping in as the new Senior Pastor. Under Rowe’s leadership, the building received updates, including a fresh coat of orange paint and a new logo. Community events like the annual church BBQ and youth-driven initiatives marked this era.

In 2016, Minister Rowe prepared to return to Ontario, prompting another leadership transition. Bishop Daniel and Evangelist Andrea Samuels from Alberta were called to BC, and in May 2017, during Bethel’s 25th anniversary, the Samuels were officially installed as Senior Leaders.

Bethel continued its growth, paying off its building in full by November 2020—a remarkable feat during the pandemic. Extensive renovations followed, with over $75,000 raised to upgrade multimedia ministries and expand youth resources. The Missions and Evangelism Department thrived, feeding hundreds while spreading God’s Word.

Today, Bethel remains dedicated to serving the City of Surrey, forming connections with churches and leaders worldwide. With over 30 years of ministry, Bethel’s story continues, filled with faith, community, and unwavering commitment to God’s work.
